Touring the US

I have been laid-off from my job of 18 years. COVID-19 had dramatically affected the document management company where I was a web administrator. Companies who have their own COVID-19 related problems have cut back on printing and other document related expenditures. This, in turn, has resulted in a substantial drop in revenue for document management and printing companies. So the company for which I had worked needs to restructure to work things out. I initially did not think that I was on the lay-off list. I had a diverse range of duties which were important for the company. But that diversity may have been a factor. My various web administration and development duties involved multiple departments. Those duties could be split up and assigned to people in the related departments. My disclosure that I was going on a cycling tour in March 2021 may have also been a factor. I had discussed the potential of dropping to part-time at that time so that I could continue my employment. But dividing my duties among others would make that unnecessary for the company. The end result is that my 18 year job has come to an end.

I hold no ill will toward management. These are tough times for probably most service oriented businesses. Additionally, the management teams involved with me, including top level ones, are among the best with whom I have worked. They have been very collaborative with me and helped me move from a city level print designer to a corporate level web administrator and developer.

My work with the company has not been completely shut down. I am being brought back as an outside consultant. Plus the potential rehire is high once the company recovers.

So I find myself with a gap between the lay-off and when I intended to do a cross country US tour. I was planning on beginning the tour in March 2021. I have decided to broaden the tour into more areas of the US. It will be challenging and epic for me and I hope interesting for others.

I will be posting here and in the following social media accounts.
